Is Your Workplace Life Insurance Enough?

If you have life insurance through work, that is a valuable benefit and a great place to start. For many Canadians, however, workplace life insurance may not be enough on its own.

A lot of people assume that if they are covered through their employer, they already have all the protection they need. But the truth is, workplace life insurance is often designed to provide basic coverage - not necessarily enough to fully support a family or replace a personal policy.

In many cases, the amount of coverage provided through work is based on your salary. While that can certainly help, it may not go very far if your loved ones would need to cover bigger financial responsibilities such as a mortgage, rent, everyday bills, debts, childcare, or future expenses.

For example, if something happened to you, would the coverage from work be enough to help your family stay in their home? Would it give them time to adjust financially? Would it help cover final expenses without creating extra stress during an already difficult time? These are important questions to think about when deciding whether your workplace coverage is truly enough.

Another factor to keep in mind is that workplace life insurance is usually tied to your job. If you leave your employer, switch jobs, lose your position, or retire, you may also lose that coverage. That can be a problem if you still need protection later on, especially if your health has changed or buying new coverage becomes more expensive.

There is also less flexibility with workplace coverage than with a personal policy. Because it is part of a group benefits plan, you usually do not have much control over the amount of coverage, the policy structure, or how long the protection stays in place. It may be helpful, but it is not always built around your personal goals, your family situation, or your long-term financial needs.

That does not mean workplace life insurance is not worth having. In fact, it can be a very helpful benefit and an excellent foundation. But for many people - especially those with children, a partner, a mortgage, or other financial responsibilities - it may make sense to consider additional personal coverage as well.

Personal life insurance can give you more control over the amount of protection you choose and help ensure your coverage stays with you, not your employer. It can also give you peace of mind knowing you have a plan in place that is based on your own needs and budget.

A good question to ask yourself is this: if something happened to you tomorrow, would the life insurance through your job be enough to protect the people who rely on you?

If the answer is no, or even maybe, it may be time to take a closer look at your options.

At Specialty Life, we believe life insurance should be simple to understand. If you are not sure whether your workplace coverage is enough, call us today to speak with a licensed advisor. We can help you review your options and find coverage that fits your needs and your budget.
